We are grateful to Orsted for their sponsorship of the Industrial Cadet programme.
FRENCH TRIP 2024
Our trip to France offers students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in both history and language, while experiencing French culture firsthand. By visiting key historical sites and vibrant cultural landmarks, students deepen their understanding of the past and enhance their appreciation of the French way of life. The trip also allows them to develop their language skills in real-world settings, from ordering food to navigating new surroundings. Whether exploring the historic landscapes of Normandy or the bustling streets of Paris, students gain a broader perspective on the connections between history, language, and culture.
In Normandy, students step back in time to explore the events of World War II and the Norman Conquest. They visit the British and American Cemeteries, gaining an insight into the sacrifices made during the D-Day landings. A trip to Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc allows them to see firsthand the locations where key battles took place. Students also visit Arromanches and then Bayeux, where they get the chance to visit the Bayeux Tapestry which brings to life the story of the Norman Conquest, helping students connect medieval history to the area around them.
In Paris, students experience the cultural heart of France. A Bateaux-Mouches boat trip along the Seine provides stunning views of the city's famous landmarks, while a walk down the Champs-Élysées allows for some well-earned shopping and free time. Previously, we have visited world-renowned sites such as the Arc de Triomphe, Sacré-Cœur, the Louvre, and the Musée d'Orsay, where students explore France’s rich artistic and architectural heritage. The trip concludes with a magical day at Disneyland Paris, offering a fun and memorable way to round off the experience.
At Walney School, we are committed to providing our students with a deep understanding of politics and democracy. Recently, our Humanities teacher, Mr. Freel, had the fantastic opportunity to take part in the UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador Programme.
This prestigious programme included meetings with Sir Lindsay Hoyle (Speaker of the House of Commons), Lord McFall (Lord Speaker), Nus Ghani (Deputy Speaker), and Baronesses Lola Young and McIntosh of Hudnall. These experiences have provided valuable insights that will further enhance the teaching of democracy and political engagement at Walney School.
We already offer a strong foundation in politics through Personal Development lessons, where students explore political parties and how the country is governed. In KS4, all students study GCSE Citizenship Studies, which covers UK politics and participation, and we have previously run a mock General Election with Year 7 to give students a hands-on experience of democracy in action.
By bringing these real-world experiences into the classroom, we aim to equip our students with the knowledge and skills they need to become informed and active citizens.
